A save the date is a promise. Once Bua has it, she is invited. That's the one thing to understand before you send any, and it's why the guest list has to be close to final first.
Short answer: Send a save the date for an Indian wedding as soon as the date and city are fixed: about 2 to 3 months ahead for a local wedding, 4 to 6 months for an outstation or destination wedding, and 6 months or more if guests are flying in from abroad. Include both names, the date (or date range) and the city, and say a formal invitation will follow. Leave out the full schedule; it will change.
When should you send a save the date?
| Your wedding | Send the save the date | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Local, guests in the same city | 2 to 3 months before | Mainly so nobody books a trip that weekend |
| Outstation, guests travel within India | 4 to 6 months before | Train and flight fares climb as the date gets close |
| Destination wedding | 5 to 6 months before | Guests need leave approved and stays booked |
| Guests coming from abroad | 6 months or more | Visas, long-haul fares and annual leave |
| Peak season (November to February) | Add a month to any of the above | Hotels and venues in wedding cities fill early |
What should a save the date include?
- Both names.
- The date, or the range if it's a three-day wedding.
- The city, so guests can plan travel.
- “Invitation to follow.” It tells guests details are coming and saves you fifty “what time?” messages.
Leave out the function-by-function schedule and the venue if it isn't booked yet. Anything you put on a save the date, guests will quote back to you after it changes.
Who should get a save the date?
Only people who are definitely on the final list. You can't un-send one. If you're unsure about a group (office, the extended neighbourhood), wait and send them the full invitation later.

Save the date card, video or link?
A photo card is fine for a save the date, because it carries one fact: the date. Where a link helps is later. If the save the date and the invitation live on the same wedding link, guests who saved it early get the full details in the same place they already have.
On Wedence, the Signature plan's Event Invites can make a separate save-the-date link that shows your names, photo and date with no schedule, so you can send it months early and the full invitation later from the same wedding. Frequently asked questions
How early should you send a save the date for an Indian wedding?
About 2 to 3 months ahead for a local wedding, 4 to 6 months for an outstation or destination wedding, and 6 months or more for guests flying in from abroad. Add a month in peak wedding season.
What do you write on a save the date?
Both names, the date or date range, the city, and a line saying the formal invitation will follow. For example: "Save the date! Priya & Rahul are getting married on 23 January 2027 in Pune. Formal invitation to follow."
Do you need to send a save the date for an Indian wedding?
It isn't required, but it helps for outstation, destination and NRI guests who need time for leave, travel and visas. For a local wedding, an early invitation can do the same job.
Is it okay to send a save the date on WhatsApp?
Yes. WhatsApp is how most Indian families share wedding news now. Send it individually or by broadcast to the people on your final list, not to a large group where it gets buried.
Should everyone who gets a save the date get an invitation?
Yes. A save the date is a promise of an invitation, so send them only to guests who are definitely on the final list.
