Indian guests don't skip the RSVP because they're rude. They skip it because in most families, asking “are you coming?” sounds like you doubt them. Of course they're coming. They're family. Also, Mausaji will decide on the morning of the haldi. Meanwhile the caterer wants a number by Friday.
Short answer: To get wedding RSVPs without sounding rude, give guests a reason (“the caterer needs numbers”), a date, and a one-tap way to reply for each function. Ask individually, not in the family group. Send a gentle reminder about two weeks before your deadline and a last call two or three days before. Make it easy to say no, and you'll get more honest yeses.
What does RSVP mean on a wedding card?
RSVP comes from the French répondez s'il vous plaît, “please reply”. On a wedding card it means: tell the hosts if you're coming, by the date given. On Indian cards you'll often see it softened to “kindly confirm”, followed by the names of whoever is collecting the replies.
RSVP wording for the card or invitation
| Tone | Wording |
|---|---|
| Formal | Kindly confirm your presence by 5 January 2027. |
| Per function | Please RSVP for each function you'll attend by 5 January. |
| Warm | We're planning food and seating, so please let us know by 5 January whether you can make it. |
| Hindi | Kripya 5 January tak apni upasthiti ki pushti karein. |
| With a reason | The caterer needs final numbers on 7 January. Please reply by the 5th. |
Why does an Indian wedding need an RSVP per function?
Because the numbers are never the same. Sixty people at the mehndi, two hundred at the sangeet, four hundred and fifty at the reception, and each one is catered separately. A single “yes” tells you nothing about the haldi. Ask per function and ask how many are coming from each family, because the uncle replying usually speaks for five people. More on this in why RSVP has to be per function.

How do you collect RSVPs per function without a spreadsheet?
Put the RSVP on the invitation itself. On Wedence, guests open your wedding link, tap yes or no for each function, and say how many are coming. They don't need an app or an account. You see a live count per function on every plan, free included.
When you need more than counts, Pro adds names next to every reply, filters and export for the caterer, and automatic WhatsApp reminders to guests who haven't replied yet, sent from approved templates so you don't have to message 300 people yourself. Details on the wedding RSVP page; prices on the pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
How do you politely ask guests to RSVP for a wedding?
Give a reason and a date, and make replying one tap: "We're finalising numbers with the caterer on 5 January. Could you let us know which functions you'll make it to?" Ask individually rather than in a family group.
When should I send an RSVP reminder?
Send a gentle reminder about two weeks before your RSVP deadline and a last call two or three days before it. Two reminders are usually enough.
What is the full form of RSVP?
Répondez s'il vous plaît, French for "please reply". On a wedding invitation it asks guests to tell the hosts whether they will attend.
How do I write RSVP in Hindi on a wedding card?
A common line is: "Kripya 5 January tak apni upasthiti ki pushti karein" (kindly confirm your presence by 5 January).
Can guests RSVP to each wedding function separately?
Yes. On Wedence, guests reply yes or no for each function on the same link and say how many are coming, and the couple sees a count per function. Free plans see counts; Pro adds the names.
