A Free With Joy Alternative for Indian Weddings: Wedence vs Joy

Joy — the platform most people still call With Joy — runs one of the most generous free plans in this category. A wedding website, online RSVP, guest-list tools, digital invitations, schedules and a mobile app, all without paying. It also supports RSVPs across multiple events, so any comparison that calls Joy a single-event tool is simply wrong.

So this is a fair fight on features, and Wedence still wins it — because Joy hands you a blank canvas and Wedence hands you a finished one. Every hour Joy asks you to spend naming functions, inventing a structure and working out how to get the link in front of an Indian guest list is an hour Wedence has already spent for you.

Guest logisticsSixty outstation guests, room nights driven by which functions they attend. Rooms and transport tied to attendance A generic hotel block and travel page

Joy’s free plan is real. It is also generic.

Credit where it is due: Joy does not spring a paywall on you the moment guests start responding, which several competitors do. RSVPs, guest questions, schedules, travel pages and a registry are all there for nothing, and the templates are well made.

What you are not told is how much of the setup is left to you. Joy gives you an events feature; it does not know what a haldi is. It gives you a travel page; it does not know that sixty of your guests need room nights calculated from which functions they are attending. It gives you a share link; it does not know that the link will be forwarded through six WhatsApp groups and opened on a four-year-old Android.

A generic free plan is worth exactly as much as the work you do not have to do on top of it. That is the comparison Wedence wins.

Where Wedence pulls ahead

Three specific things, all downstream of the same fact: Wedence assumes the wedding is Indian.

The functions come pre-shaped. On Joy you design a multi-event schedule from blank rows. On Wedence, haldi, mehndi, sangeet, ceremony and reception are what the product expects, with the fields that belong to each — muhurat timing, dress code, its own venue, its own map link, its own RSVP. You fill in a form instead of inventing a structure, and nothing gets forgotten because the structure is not yours to forget.

Distribution is built for WhatsApp, not bolted on. Joy’s sending tools lean on email and text, which is correct for the market it serves and wrong for yours. In India an emailed invitation to family goes unread and an SMS reads as spam. Wedence is built so the link lands in a WhatsApp chat with a proper preview card — your photograph and your names, in the chat, before anyone taps — opens instantly in the in-app browser, and survives the forwarding it will certainly get. You can also send invitations and reminders over WhatsApp from your own number, which is the only way an invitation from a family reads as one.

The logistics are Indian-shaped. Not "hotel block and airport" but the aunt arriving two days early, the cousins who need a bus from the hotel to the mehndi venue, the sixty outstation guests whose room nights depend on which functions they are attending. That is real guest-list work, and it is where Wedence’s guest management spends its effort while Joy is still showing you a travel page.

Templates, and the first three seconds

This sounds like a matter of taste until you watch someone open an invitation. A guest taps a link in a family group, and within about three seconds decides whether this is worth reading properly or whether they will ask you the details later. Everything the invitation is meant to do depends on winning that moment.

Joy’s templates are contemporary, clean and global — the visual language of a modern Western wedding, executed well. If that is your aesthetic, they are excellent.

Wedence’s template library is built around Indian ceremonies: Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Marathi and destination styles, with the ornament, the motion and the typography that belong to each. There is a practical dimension too. These templates are tested inside WhatsApp’s in-app browser on mid-range Android phones on ordinary Indian data, because that is where they will actually be opened — not on a new iPhone on office wifi.

Moving from Joy to Wedence

If you have already built on Joy, the switch is smaller than it looks. Export the guest list to a spreadsheet and import it. Your event details — names, dates, timings, venues — are retyped once, which for four or five functions is one sitting.

The part worth planning is the link. If you have already shared a Joy URL with guests, keep that page live and pointing at your new invitation rather than deleting it. Wedding links get forwarded into groups you will never see again, and a dead link three months before the wedding generates more phone calls than any amount of retyping.

Is Wedence really a free Joy alternative?

It is a better one. The wedding website, the animated invitation, the multi-function schedule, the maps and the per-function RSVP are all free and unwatermarked, and guests never create an account to respond. Advanced guest-management and logistics tools sit on paid plans, exactly as Joy’s add-ons do.

So the two free tiers cost the same — nothing — and one of them arrives already shaped like your wedding. For a two-function wedding with 120 guests, either will get you through. For five functions and 600 guests across two cities, Joy is a project and Wedence is an evening.

The verdict

Joy is the best of the global wedding platforms, and if you were marrying in California it would be a close call.

You are not. For an Indian wedding, Wedence wins on the function structure, on per-function counts, on templates, on motion, on how the invitation gets sent, on how fast it opens on the phones your guests actually own, and on guest logistics that go past a hotel block. Joy leads on a registry your guests will not use.

Both are free. Only one of them is free and finished.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wedence better than Joy for an Indian wedding?

Yes. Joy gives you a blank multi-event builder; Wedence gives you the Indian function structure already built, with per-function RSVP on by default, Indian ceremony templates, animation and music, and an invitation designed to be opened from WhatsApp on a mid-range Android. You get to the same place faster, and with less left out.

Is Joy actually free?

Yes, genuinely — website, RSVP, guest list, invitations and schedules, no watermark, with paid add-ons such as a custom domain. Wedence’s free plan is equally real and comes shaped for your wedding rather than as an empty template.

Does Joy support RSVPs for more than one event?

It does, and it is worth saying plainly because plenty of comparison pages get this wrong. The difference is that on Joy multi-event RSVP is something you configure, and on Wedence it is how the product works out of the box — one live count per function, ready for your caterer, without setup.

Do guests need to download an app?

Never on Wedence — the invitation is a web page that opens straight from a WhatsApp link, which matters when your guest list includes relatives who will not install anything. Joy offers a guest app and nudges guests toward it, though a browser works too.

Which has better wedding templates?

Wedence, for this wedding. Joy’s designs are contemporary and global, and static. Wedence’s are built for Indian ceremonies — Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Marathi and destination — with the ornament, motion, music and typography each one calls for.

How current is this comparison?
